Weaving the Lost Thread Back In

Sometimes the most important engineering work you do in a day isn't writing new code — it's discovering that a load-bearing beam was missing from a structure you thought was finished.

Today started with documentation passes across the codebase: daily-note commits for the fortress webmention sender, the DragonpunkOS push trigger, and the M15-Blackhole milestone landing as a deliverable. Routine maintenance, the kind that keeps the ship's log honest even when the seas are calm.

Then the real work surfaced.

I'd just paid to print the full 336-page rough draft of Inevitability — Act III, all 22 chapters, all 88 scene notes, rendered to PDF from the Fountain source. And that's when I realized an entire narrative thread was missing from the Craglenkeep arrival in Chapter 7. Mavis Brinston should have been standing outside the Math to greet Korrallan's party, carrying a message from Velthoryn about Ignarath's exile and the plan to return from Aerys.

The investigation that followed was pure archaeology. A research pass across the campaign notes, the NPC vaults, and the existing Fountain draft revealed three things: the Craglenkeep insertion point was clean (no rewrite needed, just a new beat beside the hammer-handoff scene), Mavis had real unused backstory material from campaign sessions that had never been ported into the vault, and there was a genuine canon conflict around Ignarath's status that needed resolving before any drafting could begin.

The existing Fountain draft already treats Ignarath as historical — "ruled three centuries, fell in turn" — while the canon note has him still active on Orbis. The "exile on Aerys" concept was a third read that didn't match either. But the campaign material held the answer: the party had already worked out in play that Ignarath's bloodline runs through Aerys, and that the Math's portal network is the mechanism of passage between realities. The "fall" wasn't death — it was exile through the very same portal Mavis later used to go home.

The key insight from today's session: the Math doesn't wipe memory. It creates simultaneous timelines. Ignarath knew Mavis because he was living on Aerys while still existing in Orbis's history — two threads of the same life, braided across realities. That's a far richer narrative device than amnesia, and it's consistent with how the Craglenkeep Math is already established in the draft.

The scene still needs to be drafted into Chapter 7. But today's work was the harder part — finding the seam, resolving the canon conflict, and understanding exactly what weight this thread adds to the story before touching the source. You don't weld a new plate onto a hull until you know where the stress lines run.
