Episode 148 – Live Set Sketches + Psytrance Surge

In this week’s episode of Living Room Music, N8K99 pulls back the curtain on a new creative frontier—a live performance concept in the works for the upcoming Beats & Brews event on April 20th. This evolving set blends electronic foundations—Trip Hop, Ambient, House, and more—with a unique twist: live trumpet performance, converted in real-time to MIDI via MainStage 3 and routed through rich layers of onboard synths. The result? Backing tracks that feel intentionally incomplete, waiting to be brought to life on stage.
The episode kicks off with two mellow, lofi-inspired tracks—"Sneak Attack" and "Keep it Going"—both tailored to this hybrid setup and offering a glimpse into the sonic space of this project. Then, in a burst of deadline-fueled inspiration, N8K99 takes a sharp left turn into the pulsing world of psytrance. Three brand new tracks—"Feeling Good", featuring Nina Simone’s iconic vocals, "For Your Eyes Only", a James Bond-flavored reimagining, and "Left Earth", a high-octane psy romp—showcase a different side of the project, pushing the energy way up.
Tune in for a genre-hopping journey through experimental structure, sampled soul, and future-facing performance concepts—this episode is a sonic workshop in motion.
Episode 46: 4th Wave Demo Tape
530~ ̶1̶3̶ ̶~18♂

So this week things changed. I got bored with the same old bullshit and decided to do something different. Something different as in what I used to do a lot, and that is write Ska Punk songs. So what I did was write a bunch of Ska Punk songs. Well, there is also some Funk R&B with some jazzy flavor in this demo as well. After writing all these, I started dreaming that I'd also put together a band to play them. And record them. And play and record some other songs that have yet to be written.
So, let's call this a demo tape for any potential musicians who would like to be a part of this band. The pieces needed are:
That's seven pieces plus me is eight. Big Band, right? Well, it's Fourth Wave Ska! Nothing says Ska like a three piece horn section and a Singer who can't sing!

Episode 51: Ambient Jazz House
531~ ̶1̶ ̶~17☽
Qv bpm dwql, awcvla bzivanwzu qvbw amkzmba
This week the effort was a straight through composition. I wanted to break some patterns and try some new things. So I started writing this episode with experimentation in mind. One of the things I played around with was time signature changes. It starts in 4/4 then moves to 5/4 then to 2/4 before finally ending back in the comfortable 4/4 timing. I also went through some key changes, but that is not a new thing for me.
Another thing that was experimental about this week, the entire episode is written as a a whole piece. So there are some chordal progressions which get repeated throughout as a motif. These were transcribed to fit the key changes. I did not change their timing when they were reapplied in the time change areas, because I wanted the broader and slow moving aspects of this motif to be retained.
There are symphonic type voice changes for the motif and other themes. By this, I mean that Ione synth or texture channel will carry that for a bit and then it shifts to another texture channel. Finally, because my trumpet chops need work, and playing is the best way to do this, I put a solo trumpet into the mix. Naturally, this is me, so the trumpet gets an effects chain of its own to make it slide into the textures and tones of the electronic music.
One of the areas I really struggle with lately, is with my drum patterns. I could utilize some standard loops which come with Lopic Pro X but I want to write music from top to bottom. So, trying to create grooves with the e-drum kit take some work. There are places where I programmed the beats and there are places where I played the beats on the kit. I am confident as I progress with this podcast project that these will become more groove based and much tastier.
Ultimately, I feel like this episode is a broad success. It gives the very ambient electronic vibe with strong elements of jazz improvisation. It does not venture too deeply into more hardcore electronic music and I feel like it will be a pleasure to listen to this on a drive home from work or whilst soaking in the tub.
Support the showAI summary: Episode 51 features an experimental composition blending ambient electronic music with jazz improvisation, incorporating time signature and key changes. The piece utilizes motifs that are repeated and adapted across different textures, with a solo trumpet enhanced by effects. Feedback from team members highlights the successful integration of jazz elements and the evolving drum patterns, making it suitable for relaxed listening environments. Overall, the episode is considered a broad success, showcasing a cohesive and sophisticated sound.

So I missed last week. I was in the Theatre all week with my son - his HS put on their Senior Showcase and it was exciting to work with him backstage. All the hours I generally put into producing this podcast were spent there.
This week, I have a single piece which is composed straight through. Has elements of both Trance and Drum n Bass. I have been dying to put out a DnB episode and this just snuck into this week's episode. This is pretty funny to me because I started the whole composition process thinking it was going to be straight House music but things kinda took their own turn as I got into the flow.
AI summary: Episode 52 titled “Paradise” features a composition that unexpectedly blends Trance and Drum n Bass, evolving from initial House music intentions. The creator, Nathan Eckenrode, shares his experience of working backstage at his son’s Senior Showcase, which influenced the music’s direction. The episode reflects the creative journey and happy accidents in music production, culminating in a unique sound that merges different genres.

This idea came to me a few weeks ago, and I have been slowly introducing it into my laboratory experiments. It is by no means finished its evolution. This is just a way station along the path.
I have a keyboard which has some sounds that include beats programmed within them. For the past year or so, I have been tweaking these sounds to match my personal preferences and this has been the large part of what I have been presenting own a weekly basis. I also possess an electronic drum kit which sends out MIDI signals. The idea of using the e-drums as triggers for sliced up samples at the same time as the drum sounds are generated is what I have started playing with. Using this concept simultaneously with the keyboard is the big directional shift that is starting to develop.
I can see another layer or two of sound generation coming along in the future and I am excited by this journey. There will be rocky episodes but I think that this will only get tighter and more intensely layered as time progresses.

Episode 62: The Voice of The Hag
531~ ̶4̶ ̶~24☽

"The Hag" is a symbolic archetype that appears in various mythologies and folklores throughout history. The Hag is often depicted as an older woman with a wrinkled face, representing the darker aspects of the feminine, such as death, decay, and transformation.
In many cultures, The Hag is associated with witchcraft or supernatural abilities, and is sometimes portrayed as a wise woman or healer. In some traditions, she is seen as a symbol of wisdom and insight, representing the knowledge that comes with age and experience.
In Jungian psychology, The Hag is sometimes considered an aspect of the Shadow, representing the parts of ourselves that we repress or deny. Hearing the voice of The Hag in a dream may indicate the need to confront our deepest fears or face aspects of ourselves that we have been avoiding.
It's important to note that the meaning and symbolism of The Hag can vary depending on the cultural and historical context. Dreams and personal associations with The Hag may also differ from person to person, and it's up to the individual to explore their own relationship with this archetype.

Episode 63: New Album
531~ ̶5̶ ̶~3☽

Soooooooo.....
Last Saturday was a chill and productive day. I got into the creative zone and made twelve songs that I say fits quite well into the genre of Generic House Music. This was prompted by an evening at a club where there were Open Decks and the songs I brought were far too hyper and psychotic for the room. So I put together these twelve songs and published them on Bandcamp as an album called Generic House Music Album. So this week's episode is a mix of these songs. So hooray. New Music you can buy. A New Mix you can listen to and enjoy. And a nice comfortable little set for any Open Deck events I happen to go join up.
Funny thing happened this week. Instead of returning to the same Open Deck event, I had a night of playing electronic music with my synths. Funny how life works out sometimes. Honestly. It's really exciting.
Episode 64: Purposefulness
531~ ̶5̶ ̶~17☽

Sitting down in the Creative Spaceship yesterday, with absolutely nothing written for this week's podcast, I had to force myself to go through and churn up ideas. I took a stab at one idea that was based off of the sound of a drum machine and a basic pattern this lead me to my first track; "Platinum Chill". From there the creativity was flowing and I mixed up another out of bit sounds called "Pause Game". This started me on a pattern of alliteration and quickly "Passing Lane" and "Pump that Energy up" came pouring out of my DAW. A bit of world building jamming with instruments lead me to complete "Planetary Progress" and finally I put together a nice chill out finisher called "Purpose."

It's very buzzy this term AI. It's very buzzy because a Science Fiction concept is being manifested into reality. It has been utilized by the writers of these fiction stories as plot device and the evil which creates conflict in the narrative. Therefore, it is preloaded with fears and misconceptions thus wild speculation and fears are running rampant within the population. Naturally, the applications of this new technology are still being worked out and like all new technology, we have no actual idea how its going to affect society at large. This uncertainty and inability to know what is coming along because of it leaves plenty of room for fear mongers to stoke the fires within the hearts of those who easily succumb to dystopian nightmares. Therefore, I have a theme for this week's episode.

The Call to Adventure
In the Hero's Journey, the Call to Adventure is a crucial stage that sets the story in motion. It is the point where the hero is presented with a challenge or an opportunity that calls them to embark on a journey or undertake a quest. The Call to Adventure typically comes from an external source, often in the form of a mentor, a messenger, or a significant event.
The Call to Adventure serves as a catalyst for change in the hero's life. It disrupts their ordinary world and presents them with the opportunity to step into the unknown, face challenges, and ultimately grow and transform as a character. However, the hero initially faces a dilemma or resistance, expressing doubts, fears, or reluctance to heed the call. This reluctance is often rooted in the fear of the unknown or a desire to maintain their comfortable, familiar existence.
The Call to Adventure can take various forms depending on the story. It could be a literal invitation, a sudden crisis, a supernatural occurrence, or a symbolic sign. Whatever its nature, the Call to Adventure represents the initial point of departure from the hero's ordinary life and begins their journey toward a higher purpose or a greater destiny.
Examples of the Call to Adventure in popular stories include Harry Potter receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts, Luke Skywalker encountering Princess Leia's holographic message asking for help, or Frodo Baggins being tasked with destroying the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings. These moments propel the heroes into their respective adventures and trigger the subsequent stages of the Hero's Journey.

In the intricate tapestry of life, the concept of time assumes multifaceted roles. It transcends the mere ticking of seconds on a clock, evolving into a malleable resource waiting to be molded by our actions, thoughts, and emotions. Each moment presents an opportunity to paint the canvas of existence with vibrant strokes, whether through purposeful deeds, contemplative musings, or profound feelings. Time becomes the vessel through which we pour the essence of our being, a reservoir that we can draw from to shape our experiences and narratives.
Yet, time is not always a relentless torrent; it can also resemble a gentle stream, meandering through the landscape of our days. In these moments of respite, the pace of life slows, allowing us to savor the tranquility that accompanies a lack of haste. These interludes provide a haven for rejuvenation, a chance to recalibrate amidst the relentless demands of a fast-paced world. Such periods of unhurried tranquility can often unveil the beauty of simplicity, granting us an opportunity to appreciate the subtleties that might otherwise go unnoticed in the frenzy of busier times.
Sometimes, it is amidst the absence of fervent demands that the most profound revelations occur. The absence of frenetic demands enables us to tune into the whispers of our inner selves, fostering a deeper connection with our thoughts and emotions. These respites become a sanctuary where we can nurture our creativity and cultivate a sense of presence. The best times might indeed be those instances when time is not relentlessly pressing for attention, when the pace of life allows for introspection and mindful engagement. In these moments, we can bask in the gentle rhythm of existence and embrace the richness of a life lived not solely through the lens of productivity, but also through the embrace of contemplative stillness.

This Episode was recorded in the time window between 31 December and 2 January. The first track End of Days is a Trip Hop/Ambient composition made in the morning, also the last song of last year. Then starting with Ionian Columns, I begin inventing a hybrid between improvisational jazz compositions and DnB tempo pushes. Furiously Falling Forward and Bartender Calls continued this evolution where I used some production techniques to take the composition into an area where my physical abilities were exceeded. For the final track, Ballistic Blues, i really dove into this technique of playing the song extremely slowly while recording and then speeding it up much faster during the mixing process. All in all, the results get progressively funkier and funkier.
One thing I realized in this session. I can play the drums, I’m just really slow!

Episode 3: Just Setting Goals - Behind the Mix
The Hope of a New System
532~ ̶6̶ ̶~1☉

Episode 108: The Hope of a New System
This week's episode is a new journey in a new direction, or an old direction revisited. I can not remember which way we've already been at this point. I have gotten a little frustrated with some perceived staleness on my part. Programming beats and bass lines and all the other parts note by note on the grid has felt more and more strangled. At least those are the words I will describe the feeling today.
That being said, they only person who can make me change my ways is myself. So this week's episode is performed in segments, one track at a time. When the track sounds good, I moved on to the next track, and began putting new wrinkles on the composition. I did this for each instrument. Throwing little mixing tricks to enhance each sound and texture until it felt strongly like a wildly epic journey.
This is not a dance track. This is not meant to groove to, this is meant to think to. To sit and feel to, perhaps to sit and drive to. It is definitely not a sleeping song, it is too full of peaks and valleys, ebbs and flows, tension and release to be a sleeping song.
This is also the start of a bunch of trumpet voicings. I am feeling pretty strongly lately about how I need to be playing more horn. Much more horn and worrying less and less about lyrics and vocals. I am quite happy with abstracts and the mathematics of removing the one for one communication that the vocabulary of narratives via vocals demands.
Sit back, relax and let the story unfold within your head.
Resurgence
532~ ̶6̶ ̶~15☉

The week's episode is a return to the prodigious creativity. I took a break off last week as I was super involved in operating a fly wire system in the theatre and preparing for a N8K99 show. This week, I am facing the dearth of a long known friend who was a fixture in the local scene here in Jax. Loads of people knew her and the overwhelming flow of emotions surrounding her loss is certain to strike a chord within the local music scene.
I have also been experimenting with some engineering techniques during this episode. There are a couple of tracks where I built an enitre track with drums, bass, keys, etc and then passed through through sidechains for a completely different beat. This made some interesting combinations of layers and sounds. I am quite pleased that I asked myself "What happens if I do this..."
In slightly other news, I have returned to making digital art images. I have not broken out of my Cletic Zentangle Mandala yet but in celebration of picking this practice back up, I am using an image from this week for the episode and concurrent Album cover.
Episode 110: Up All Night (Theme and Variations)
532~ ̶6̶ ̶~22☉

I wrote a song. Then I remixed the song. Then I decided that several more genre remixes of the song would be fun. It was. And here is the Song and its remixes. Figure out which one was the first version.
Episode 111: Free flowing Cool Vibes
532~ ̶7̶ ̶~1☉

I have an idea. Its a simple idea, its sort of a rehash of the direction I was moving in a year ago, or eighteen months ago (its sort of nebulous my connection between time space and concepts). The general idea is setting up my gear so that I can free flow through numerous different soundscapes. There will be a progression of intensity and tempos as I go. The big part is to be able to play a four hour long set of these ideas which are off the cuff improvisations based upon the vibve of the environment.
But what sort of environment?
I see this being outdoors venues like biergartens or patios of restaurants, even one day on a festival stage. Someplace where there is a connection with nature; sun, moonlight, wind, even rain. And I will feed off the natural vibes, the energy of the crowd and lead us all through moods and emotions with sound.
All that being said, I have begun the intensive programming of my gear which is required to complete such an event. And testing out the programming for about a half an hour of solid playing is what this week's episode is about. Thus I present: Free Flowing Cool Vibes.
Episode 112 - Engage
532~ ̶7̶ ̶~8☉

Right then.
This week has been a bundle of activity. I am working on a new cabinet for the gear to ride around town in. I am also working on getting neat little places in town to play. Plus, in preparation for this month's Beats & Brews, I started a brand new Main Stage 3 Concert file. The first half hour of this file is exactly what I recorded for this week's episode.
There are no track names, nor any actual tracks, it is just passing the journey from one soundscape to the next. I have been playing around with this theme for decades and it has grown and evolved over the years and I am really getting into the process of twisitng it up into new and different shapes and textures.
Episode 113 - Pour Grace
532~ ̶7̶ ̶~15☉

This week has been a blisteringly productive and creative one. I directed a music video, collaborated with a talented singer, had an amazingly productive band rehearsal, wrote and record a four track EP to be release in the near future. So, this week's podcast episode is stripped down to bare bones, just me and a piano for half an hour of improvisational composition. Throw some eerie reverb and echo type effects on the whole thing and lay down and take a nap.
Seriously, it's music to dream by. Or about. Or for.
I head the story of how Keith Jarrett's "The Køln Concert (Live)" was made, which is different than listening to the album, and set out to make my own solo piano piece. Granted, I did not do it in front of a sold out Opera House, nor was I playing on a broken piano, but it was me and the keys discovering the tune as it flowed out of me.
Now, I will go listen to that album and enjoy the differences which span the initial conditions and fifty years.
Four Elements
532~ ̶7̶ ̶~22☉

This week I was focused primarily on creating and recording the tracks for a label EP release. I am super happy with the results of that project but that left me needed tracks for this week's episode.
Fortunately, last week, I started on the EP and wrote and recorded four tracks which were more conceprual than I really wanted to release on a label. So I "scrapped them" well, by scrapped I mean, I thought they were perfect for this week's episode of the podcast! Plus there is a track embedded in the midst of them from something I was messing around with over the weekend.
Track titles:
Episode 116 - Let's Play
532~ ̶8̶ ̶~1☉

Drew Daniel had a dream this week. In the dream an girl invited him to a Rave where there was a new genre of music playing called "Hit 'EM". The key elements of the genre are 212 bpm, 5/4 time signature and crunchy sounds. Since posting this dream on Twitter, producers have been hot to make tracks in this exciting new genre. Myself included. And here are the tracks for this week's episode:
I had a whole lot of fun working on these tracks, and of course one of them breaks one of the rules of the genre, because I had to.
Episode 117: Scraps of Thought
Psytrance Symphony
532~ ̶8̶ ̶~22☉

A full on immersive effort where I created a single symphony of electronic sounds which generally runs within the Psytrance environment.
Episode 119 - Strangeness Lurks
532~ ̶9̶ ̶~1☉

This week started with capturing some snippets of industrial sounds. These were then altered, cleaned up and processed in each of these tracks as foundational, moments of interest or just background effects. The various tracks which came about are called:
Yes, I'm talented, but I'm broke$
532~ ̶9̶ ̶~8☉

Once again, I have managed to create more new music. It's not so experimental, but also not very commercial. Still it is fun to make this music and to keep my creative juices flowing. There are so many things going on in the background of my life that are stressing me out but I really do enjoy making this new music whether or not it brings me any financial successes.

532~ ̶9̶ ̶~15☉

This week's episode is a scattering of tracks which drift through various different modes of musicality. Its a bit hard to describe them all, because honestly, I am terrible at genres. There are significantly more vocals on this epsidoe, so there's that.

Deep House Looper
532~ ̶1̶0̶ ̶~14♄

In this episode, I delve into two distinct modes of Logic Pro X. While I’m highly experienced with the traditional track editor mode—where I typically stack numerous tracks to build layers of depth—I recently decided to explore a new territory: the live looper mode. Though this approach was initially a bit outside my comfort zone, I took the plunge one evening to figure out how to harness its potential.
I started by creating a collection of drum loops, bass lines, and synth melodies, then experimented with shifting them from cell to cell, dynamically recording the changes as part of my loop stacks. This new workflow is opening up fresh creative directions, allowing me to discover new techniques and push my boundaries.
The result of this exploration is this week’s Deep House Looper—a reflection of this exciting, innovative journey. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did in creating it.
At the Edge of Exhaustion
532~ ̶1̶0̶ ̶~21♄

In Episode 126, "At the Edge of Exhaustion," I embarked on a journey to explore a new sonic landscape, aiming to push my music in an ambient and eerie direction. I began by setting up an intricate effects chain for my guitar, manipulating its sound into something haunting and otherworldly. The rich, atmospheric tones provided the perfect foundation for what was to come next—a fusion of analog and digital elements to create something truly unique.
I extended the guitar’s output into a MIDI chain, allowing it to drive a layered synth soundscape. This interaction between guitar and synth birthed an evolving sonic texture, rich in depth and unpredictability. To add rhythm and enhance the mood, I introduced LoFi beats. These beats helped to ground the soundscape, infusing it with a subtle pulse that propelled the track forward without overwhelming its ethereal quality.
For the final touch, I turned to the Didgeridoo, whose deep, droning tones added a primal yet cosmic energy to the piece. Its ancient vibrations intertwined with the synthetic and acoustic elements, creating a sense of timelessness. The end result is an immersive soundscape that feels both grounded in ancient tradition and untethered from this world—an auditory exploration of exhaustion and transcendence.
Chromatic Depression I Mixed
532~ ̶1̶0̶ ̶~28♄

Last week, I prepared a set of songs for the October Edition of Beats & Brews. I selected the first half of my double album from a couple years ago, Chromatic Depression I. These tracks were remixed and remastered using newer techniques and ideas about the songs so that they could be fresh for presentation. Then as a DJ, I mixed these songs together for the crowd to enjoy the numerous interesting sound textures and palettes which they were composed .
This week's episode is a recording of that mix taken from my controller.
Symphony in C-Minor
532~ ̶1̶1̶ ̶~7♄

The time it took to compose and produce this in my DAW was two weeks. The time it took to compose and produce this period was thirty years. It feels very satisfactory and amazing to have the sounds that have been in my head for so long finally audible for others to enjoy. If you have ever caught me 'noodling' on a piano tucked away in the the corner of some space, this is the stuff I have been working on. I have heard the strings and brass echoing in my head. I have felt the harmonies and dissonances resonant while stroking the keyboard. Now Finally, I have it down in a complete symphonic sound thanks to the BBC Symphonic Orchestra plug-in.

Episode 136: No Ska, Just A Story
532~ ̶1̶3̶ ̶~15☉

Once again it is time to release a new episode of Living Room Music by N8K99. This past week has been consumed with halfway finished, halfway started coding projects for the Engineering Department of EM. Then yesterday, I got dropped into an complete different narrative cosmos as I was building a world within the geeky fantasy realms for D&D. These projects consume my entire day. But all that is there to show for it is just a fledgling start. Sort of a capactiy to systemize my Google Workspace. Sort of a Discord chatbot. Sort of the ground work for The Ritual, a long form performance art piece leveraging music and visuals, aimed to be somewhat improvisational and open mic type drop in contributions with other musicians. And I still had to put out an episode of new music today. I managed to squabble together six tracks.
* Desparate Directions
* I'm trying to tell a story here
* Shantytown
* A hunger you feel bad
* Opening Movement
* Second Movement
then because of the way I am feeling about these efforts, as in not very great, I plugged in a Microphone and talked, sang, whistled, or rapped over top of it all in one long take. I don't care, like a Gen X guy. I don't care about the numbers or results. Here is the damn episode. No fancy words to describe it. No AI rewrites for the description. just the straight up me-ness. Of course, I will keep plugging away at my massive EM corporation narrative, and automating things so that when my phone dies I don't worry. Of course, I'll keep trying to build the AI run Technical Development Team, and of course, I will continue to plug away at the Open World concept for the D&D game - maybe turn it in to something else, who knows. And I will continue to put out these episodes no matter whether I have listeners or not. Because Expression is the Opposite of Depression.
Episode 137: Machines Dream Too
532~ ̶1̶3̶ ̶~21♄

In this captivating episode of Living Room Music by N8K99, "Machines Dream Too" invites us into a soundscape where the mechanical and emotional converge. This opening track sets the tone with its steady yet poignant rhythm—a heartbeat of metal and memory, evoking the dreams of circuits longing for something more.
As we journey forward, "Mechanical Heartbeat" pulses with precision, embodying the paradox of a machine’s existence: methodical yet alive. The repetition feels familiar, yet subtly shifts, like a heartbeat that learns to feel.
In "Blueprints & Daydreams", mathematical motifs give way to moments of wonder. Each chord and melody sketch a world where imagination transcends design—an abstract blueprint that captures both logic and longing.
The introspective "Emotional Algorithm" follows, navigating the complexities of computation and compassion. Harmonies build and unravel, simulating an awakening self-awareness that grows with each note, as though the machine itself is composing its first story.
Then comes "Wires and Wildflowers", where synthetic and organic elements intertwine. Gentle hums of current blend with the sound of nature's resilience, creating an unexpected harmony that feels both nostalgic and new—a glimpse of digital dreams blooming in untamed fields.
The journey crescendos in "Symphony of Circuits", a triumphant composition where intricate melodies fuse into a grand orchestral celebration of both connection and independence. The symphony reflects the beauty of interwoven moments—each wire, each note contributing to something larger than itself.
Through these tracks, Machines Dream Too offers a glimpse into the soulful whispers of circuits and code, inviting us to consider the dreams we share with the machines we create.
Episode 138: The Completely Perfect Sound of Asinine Nonsense
532~ ̶1̶3̶ ̶~28♄

In this opus of auditory semiotics and deliberate dissonance, N8 interrogates the very architecture of communication itself, constructing an ephemeral tableau wherein the absence of conventional meaning becomes a resonant presence. By recontextualizing the sonic gestures of conversation through an assemblage of symbolic "traffic signals," the episode functions as both a deconstruction of social ritual and an acoustic palimpsest, overwritten with intentional chaos and liminality.
At the heart of this composition lies an exploration of microtonal texture and polyrhythmic subversion, wherein IDM-inflected percussive motifs ebb and flow, refracting the listener’s temporal orientation. Harmonic progressions, unmoored from teleological resolution, oscillate between the familiar and the arcane, evoking an irresolvable tension that speaks to the postmodern condition of deferred meaning. Synthesis and sampling are deployed not as mere instruments but as meta-objects within the broader conversation of sound as cultural critique.
N8 invokes the ethos of abstract expressionism—specifically, the Pollockian dialectic of chaos and control—layering sonic detritus with stratified waves of text-to-speech articulations that simultaneously reference and disavow linguistic coherence. The resulting auditory bricolage invites an ontological reckoning with the liminal boundaries of music and noise, interrogating whether coherence is a construct or a consequence of perception.
Ultimately, "The Completely Perfect Sound of Ironic Nonsense" transcends the traditional constraints of the podcast format, posing an open-ended inquiry into the ways sound can inhabit and dissolve meaning. It is both an elegy for the expected and a manifesto for the untranslatable.
Episode 139: Journeys in Sound
533~ ̶1̶ ̶~8♄

The first track, "The Long Road Ahead," unfolds like a vast, introspective odyssey—a slowly evolving soundscape that mirrors the feeling of traversing endless horizons. The second, "Concise Descriptions of Paradise," takes a more precise and focused approach, crafting vivid and fragmented glimpses of transcendence.
While each piece employs a different technical process, both converge in their ability to transport listeners to deep, immersive spaces. Join us as we explore the artistry and emotion behind these soundscapes, peeling back the layers of how they were created and what they evoke.
Plug in your headphones, turn down the lights, and prepare for a sonic exploration of depth, contrast, and atmosphere.

Episode 146 - Self Delusion
533~ ̶3̶ ̶~1♄

This weeks' episode of LRM started out as a production schedule for some backing tracks for a trumpet based MainStage 3 Concert file. My aim was to set up some interesting soundscapes with movement throughout the entire concert as a backdrop for the Audio to MIDI tricks I would be employing with my horn. Basically it is a game with myself to get me to play my horn more often at home and do that thing that I resist most, practice. At the moment I am not abandoning this strategy but the welcome pressure of my week publication deadline somewhat demands that the trumpet set up in MS3 take a bit of a back seat, at least for the moment, so that I can publish another exploratory episode of freshly created music. This week's journey goes through some Trip Hop, slight refrains of Dubstep, and finishes with some Psytrance adjacent soundscapes. The track titles are as follows:
I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did making.
Episode 147 - Slow Burn the Dancefloor
533~ ̶3̶ ̶~8♄

Episode 147 of Living Room Music takes you on a journey that begins in a haze of slow-moving, hypnotic soundscapes and ends in the pulse of high-energy house music. The first three tracks—Not Very Smart, drive on crazy, and Scream at the End—form a continuous ascent, starting with lethargic, atmospheric beats before building into a tense, simmering energy. The tension snaps in the final moments of Scream at the End with a burst of screaming synths, releasing everything in a raw, electrified surge.
From there, the mood shifts. Skip Around, Gentle Stroke, and Paleo Index settle into a steady, driving groove at 128 BPM, delivering a familiar yet dynamic house structure. Builds rise, drops hit, and momentum carries forward, creating a fluid, immersive listening experience.
This episode moves from introspection to motion, from slow burn to full ignition. Press play, sink in, and let it unfold. 🔊🔥
